Thank you for joining me on this lovely fall day. I believe that things are being done in my community to insure both bikers and drivers safety while on the road. But clearly not enough has been done. I have looked at many websites and have gathered some information.
Vermont has thought about these problems and have done multiple things to help.First they created the bike path in 1990. The South Burlington Bike Path is about 21 miles long. The bike path is good for biking, running, walking, rollerblading and boarding. And then they added footage to roads to create bike lanes. Bike lanes allow bikers to have a little more freedom to go more places on the road. They have also made biking materials available for bikers all around Vermont. There are over 75 bike shops all over Vermont, making buying biking necessities convenient.Vermont has put many laws in place to help these issues. Like no drunk driving. People think that that law is put in place to protect other drivers. No, it's put in place to protect everyone. Other drivers, bikers, and pedestrians.
Now if we only work off of those things that have already been put in place we could make a big change. By adding on the the bike path to make it go farther around South Burlington. By making the biking lanes bigger and making more of them all over Vermont. If we are able to make changes we should make changes.
Thanks,
Bye!

Dear Lydia,
ReplyDeleteI see you've been hard at work. I applaud your efforts in revising last week's assignment while simultaneously completing this week's rigorous task. A couple of things are emerging in your writing that I want to note:
1) I am starting to hear some of your voice come through in your writing, which is nice, especially because I don't really know you.
2) You are digging deeper and I am starting to see more concrete facts and thinking.
In your revised response from last week, you uncovered some great first-hand accounts of the varied opinions and experiences Vermonters have to share with regard to your topic. You knew there were two sides to this topic, and now you have the evidence to support it. So I wonder, now, where you want to go with this information. You do suggest some changes, such as expanding bike lanes, etc. However, with rural and winding VT roads, many of which are dirt, being as they are, I wonder if expanding bike lanes is a reasonable solution to this timely and critical topic you've chosen.
If you were to picture making a documentary on this topic, what do you envision being in this movie? What questions do you still want answered? In a dream world where you could wave a magic wand, what would you want people to know after hearing about your work? These are some things to consider as you move forward.
Excellent work, Lydia. Keep it up.
Courtney
Thank you so much, yeah I am trying to bring my own writing style/voice into this writing. I agree, I think that expanding the bike lanes will be more reasonable with time and money. I think that somehow I will find some way to translate all these things into a movie at the end and hopefully there will be no more questions that need answers at the end of this project. And I have to thank you so much for actually taking the time out of your day and reading my blog posts. I really appreciate your comments and helpful hints.
ReplyDeleteHi Lydia. It's clear you had a busy week. Good job doubling up on your writing assignments.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you could do some research around the (extremely sad) bicycle accidents this summer. Not to rehash the details, but to find what contributes to car-bike accidents. I am curious, too, about how many miles of bike paths are there in either Chittenden County or all of Vermont. ( Again, this depends on the scope of your project.) Are you going to just report on South Burlington? Another good source might be talking to cycling clubs. They are on the roads a lot and might be able to give you a very experienced perspective. I know that UVM has a cycling group and Earl's might be a great source too. ( I have a teacher friend who rides all the time. If you get stuck let me know and I can give you contact information).
I agree with Courtney's last paragraph. What do you most want your audience to take away from this? That is where it is important to invest time and research - because you are in charge here! Best and have a great week. - Laurie
